Diverse city allows current and past employers to review companies they've worked for and their efforts to maintain a fair, diverse workplace.
This project was created for a Young Glory Competition. The only parameter for the project was to “make diversity a part of every day”. My partner and I came up with the idea of a review platform called Diverse City. This app would be similar to Yelp but for workplaces. Employees can review companies they have worked for regarding their importance of inclusion, fairness in pay, diverse leadership, career growth opportunities, work-life balance, and other similar topics. This provides candidates who are looking for a new job a resource to explore different companies' attitudes before having to experience it firsthand. It also provides employees an outlet to talk about their positive or negative experiences at companies they have worked for. This makes diversity a part of every day in the workplace; if you choose a company that values diversity in the first place, it also reflects throughout the company's day-to-day. Diverse City allows current and past employees to review companies they’ve worked for and their efforts to maintain a fair, diverse workplace. I designed the app interface with input and feedback from my partner.
The Problem
Minorities often go into jobs blind, without insight into how much a company values diversity or fosters an inclusive and equitable work environment for all.
We decided to go with a hexagon pattern to represent a beehive. We thought this would be successful because it’s a good representation of a productive work environment, and it was visually appealing. The login screen features a gradient with different skin tones, which hopes to promote inclusivity and representation for everyone. This was my first time creating an app prototype independently on Adobe XD, so I used a UI kit provided by Adobe. I tweaked elements to fit in with our design, like changing the middle post button from a circle to a hexagon, but it was really useful to have a template to follow for my first app prototype and it's definitely given me some helpful guidelines of how to design an app from scratch now.
I think the app is successful visually, but the concept could use more work. A useful feature would be giving users the option to review companies anonymously, but still have some verification that they work or have worked for the company they are reviewing. Users would also benefit from more features like events, discussions, hiring opportunities, and other aspects to expand the usefulness of the app.
